Every year I like to take Pop out for Veteran's Day. Usually it's for lunch or dinner and we have a beer or two, but this year is a little hectic so I pushed it to breakfast. Pop didn't say anything, but I think he misses having a beer out somewhere.....
Pop was drafted during WWII, but he was lucky in that he didn't see any action. Although he may have been the fastest typist and best shot in the service, at least to hear him tell it. I was lucky in my service time too, I was enlisted between the two Iraq wars, and was never deployed to Bosnia. Same for my stepfather, drafted in Vietnam, but never went further than Texas.
It's not that we wouldn't have served if called, when your in that's part of the deal. Any myriad of things, good or bad, but mostly bad, could have happened if we did, so that's why I count us as lucky to be here today. More so, that's why I truly respect those that did have to put it all on the line. Whether friends, family, or fellow soldiers I'll never know.
